We took a few days off to celebrate Jesus’ birthday but it is time to get back to the countdown!
8. A Tribe Called Quest’s “We Got it From Here…Thank You for Your Service”
The latest (and final) studio recording from a Tribe Called Quest came out of nowhere and it is incredible.
It popped onto the scene during the best episode of SNL in years (hosted by Dave Chappell) with this performance.
It’s heartbreaking to watch as the two remaining members performed without Pfife Dog (who was among the many we lost this year) but the flow was still there. Q-Tip is still unrivaled.
What makes the release so special is that it does something most artists from the past fail to do: they somehow managed to recapture what made them special while also making it feel relevant and not dated.
That’s almost unheard of (see Metallica’s new release, or anything by Pearl Jam over the last decade – sorry, Rob).
I can’t think of another shooter with this much character, but character is exactly what Overwatch has quite literally.
When playing a first person shooter (FPS) the story is often irrelevant, I mean, how much backstory do you need as to why one soldier would shoot a bad guy/alien/whatever in the face?
But Overwatch is unique. The cast of characters in the game feels as strong as the cast of Street Fighter.
To further the lore of the game, Activision/Blizzard has even released several video back stories to flesh out the narrative and they are high points to the franchise.
6. Daredevil Season 2
Last year I called Daredevil the best show on Netflix and season 2 was not a disappointment. It certainly helps that they cast John Bernthal (Shane from The Walking Dead) as my favorite comicbook hero – the Punisher.
Guilt and redemption play massive themes as the two heroes (Daredevil and Punisher) interact with each other in what I feel is a show that has the most direct Christian message of any show out there that doesn’t pander to Christian audiences.
I honestly can’t recommend the show enough and I think it has been long enough that I need to watch both seasons again because the show is that good.
5. The NES Classic
Yes, today has been video game heavy but as long as I can remember video games and Christmas went hand in hand. I often asked for games for Christmas. I still do (I got Dead Rising 4 this year).
The NES Classic is the original NES system with 30 games preloaded including some of the all-time greats like Metroid, Super Mario Bros, the Legend of Zelda and my personal favorite from that era:
Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out.
Nintendo hasn’t done themselves any favors as the $60 system has been in short supply and I’m still waiting to get one too.
Alright fellow nerds! Tomorrow is the exciting conclusion!
