5 Movies Worth Going to See This Christmas

December is looking to be packed again with blockbusters and movies that are making their case for Oscars and that’s a good thing.

Hit the break to see trailers for the 5 movies coming out this December that have my eye and may be worth your time. It’s organized in order of release date.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Friday, December 13th Rated PG-13)

I love this material all year long but I am always more into Lord of the Rings and the works of Tolkien around Christmas. It may date back to over a decade ago when around Christmas the LotR movies would release and I’d go with friends to see them. My wife would also buy me the extended editions the following Christmas and we’d spend a couple nights together watching all the amazing bonus footage and behind the scenes material.

This Christmas is no different as the second part of the Hobbit trilogy releases. This one falls into the category of blockbuster but is likely to get some Oscar nods as well for design, editing, sound, etc.

It also may be the #1 movie I’m looking forward to. Here’s the most recent trailer.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (Wednesday, December 18th )

I probably haven’t gone more than a few days over the last decade without referencing this movie. Most of the time it is when I get home from the church. I greet my dog with “Yoo hoo. Berkley, I’m home! It’s me. Poppa Burgundy.”

Ron and the gang move from small time anchors to being a part of a 24 hour news network. This time, they’re tackling more than sexism in the workforce, they’re taking on racism too.

This is the sequel 10 years in the making and I for one, can’t wait.

American Hustle (Christmas Day, Rated R)

Christian Bale. Jennifer Lawrence. Bradley Cooper. Jeremy Renner. Amy Adams.

When con artists work with the FBI to infiltrate the Jersey mafia you get American Hustle. A lot of times I can get skeptical of such impressive all-star casts but everything I’ve seen about this movie seems to point towards a hit. Don’t be surprised if we see multiple acting nominations come from the film.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Christmas Day, Rated PG)

Of all these movies I am most intrigued by this one and with a PG rating, it seems like it could be a feel good movie to take the whole family to.

But how do you describe it? Even the trailer seems to escape words but don’t be surprised if this earns Ben Stiller some award season love.

The Wolf of Wallstreet (Christmas Day, Rated R)

On the opposite end of Walter Mitty is the Wolf of Wallstreet, a true story about Jordan Belfort. Belfort was a stock broker who got caught up in the fast life and easy money. This movie definitely seems to serve up the cautionary tale of sin taking you farther than you want to go and paying a price higher than you want to pay.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, this movie seems to be poised to be both blockbuster and Oscar contender with stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, and even The Walking Dead’s “Shane” – Jon Bernthal.

It also has Leo dancing like this:

Here’s the full trailer featuring a brief glimpse of the dance.

With so many great movies coming out this month, which ones will you go see?
